The challenge for information architecture in shaping the experience of connected things is underpinned by a more abstract but no less important challenge — the conceptual understanding of what connects us and why.
The success of user-centred design has place humans at the centre of our understanding when it comes to the experience of technology but will this work in a world increasingly dominated by non-human actors?
In this talk, I’ll attempt to explain why I believe that a further level of abstraction is necessary, one that informs the design of social objects and understanding of the contextual activity that enables their transmission through a network of both human and non-human actors.
This talk is for anyone interested in tools for thinking about complex problems and figuring out where to start in the face of uncertainty about human behaviour and evolving technology.

Stuart Curran is an experienced software design consultant with a background in information architecture, interaction design and user research. He currently works as a lead consultant for ThoughtWorks, a global technology company providing software design and delivery services.
