Privacy as Default – Concept for Privacy of the Internet of Things

Ten years ago, I thought up a concept for privacy for the Internet of Things. I assumed back then and now, that we want these technological wonders, but probably the price we would pay is too high — a total loss of control, privacy and transparency.
To a degree, where every current violation of privacy or transparency will feel marginal. This new Internet of Things will be everywhere and it won’t come with a switch to shut it off.
This talk revisits the concept and will present an updated version. In its core, the concept redefines privacy and tries to escape the post-privacy debate. On the information side, it redefines how information should flow and how entities and ownership needs to be established on certain technological layers, but also in the design of the information interactions.
The talk and the concept is a lot about placemaking, context awareness and all the bits IA is made of, but with a twist: The information systems won’t be used by humans, but by computers — but we can’t leave that to the computer scientists anymore.

Lutz Schmitt
Living and working in Cologne, Germany. Designing interfaces and architecting information since the late 1990s. Studied design at KISD and claims to be a professional dilettante. Works as designer and consultant. Currently head of consulting at nexum AG in Cologne. Before that, money was earned while freelancing as designer, consultant and teacher. Wrote a book about the perception of time and the influence of design. He insists, that design is invisible. Enjoys consuming and preparing good food and drinks. One lifetime goal is to prepare food, that will move someone to tears of happiness. Not reached yet.
Exploring the challenges encountered when visualising data collected from both sensors and devices, but also from people. How do we combine and visualise these two potentially quite different forms of information?
