4 h. workshop
This workshop will take you on an in-depth journey through the basics of object-oriented UX. You will design (and learn about the value of designing) systems using recognisable components that match the user’s mental model.
Experience strategy
Cross-channel
We like to think that the top navigation is really important. It’s a critical component to the user experience... right?
But in practice, what is the very first thing that we hide when screen size gets tight? The navigation. Even if it’s not hidden, we are starting to see that users actually ignore persistent navigation. Instead, they often go straight for the big shiny objects — the content on the page. And users want that content to be connected to other relevant content. They don’t want to hunt through your menus, however well-intentioned.
In addition, users are rarely entering an experience through a prescriptive homepage. They are coming in through back doors like search and social. When a user lands on a content object (an article, an event, an artist, a campaign, a product), we need to ensure that they are offered up other relevant content beyond the obligatory you-might-also-be-interested-in crosslinking. And we need to make sure that from that one object instance a user can start to understand the larger system. If a homepage tells your user how your system works, object-oriented UX (OOUX) shows them.
This half day workshop will take you on an in-depth journey through the basics of object-oriented UX. Together, we will design systems comprised of consistent and recognisable objects that match our user’s real-world mental model. By focusing on objects, we will learn new strategies to create elegant, effective and modular design systems.
Session takeaways:
Sophia Voychehovski is the founder of Rewired, a UX studio based in Atlanta, GA, that consults solely to non-profits and social enterprises.
