I Did What? Self-Awareness in the Internet of Things

by Evelyn Masso

20 min. talk
A common trait of IoT devices is to increase self-awareness. How many steps we’ve walked, how many episodes we’ve watched, or how much electricity our house is using. How can we foster these dynamics to increase user engagement?

Many consumer IoT experiences promote self-awareness. Connected pedometers tell us how far we’ve walked, connected televisions tell us how many episodes we’ve watched, and connected thermostats tell us how much energy we’ve used. Many of these include goal setting as a core function, setting implicit or explicit values on these behaviors.

Experiences that increase self-awareness in people can motivate them to change their behavior or cause them to actively disengage. This talk will delve into these dynamics, examine how they play out in the current landscape, and discuss how contextually aware, compassionate user experiences can see greater user engagement.
