Alberta Soranzo, Martina Hodges-Schell
4 h. workshop
This workshop will examine the traits of an effective design team, sharing methodologies that can be used to asses your own team’s skills sets and structure. All in the name of creating better work together.
Agile methodology
Teamwork
They say that design is a team sport, and if your team operates in an agile/lean environment, strength and flexibility are more crucial than ever.
The skills required from an experience design team are vast, and it’s impossible for any given individual to be equally skilled in all of its many facets. So, how do you go about putting together a team that’s balanced, powerful and can work effectively with other teams? What is the right mixture of junior and senior practitioners? What skills, soft and hard, do you need to design and deliver outstanding experiences?
In this workshop, we’ll take a look at how to assess the skills of our colleagues (as well as our own) to best shape and manage a design team that works together (and stays together). A team where more experienced practitioners thrive and juniors are mentored toward proficiency, and where complementarity and teamwork become the foundations of success.
Finally we will look at how to use the knowledge we’ve gathered (and other techniques) to hire, motivate and keep design teams happy.
Bonus round: if you’re looking for work, what does a good team look like from the outside?
A firm believer that there’s always another way to look at a challenge, Alberta Soranzo has been hacking things to make them work better for humans since she was a child. An incorrigible nomad, she’s lived in Italy, California and is now based in London. Recently appointed Director of End-to-End Service Design at Lloyds Banking Group, she is excited about the possibility to make a real impact on the financial outcomes of people by looking after the big picture as well as focusing on the very small things that, she says, ‘matter a lot’. Unafraid of challenging conventions, Alberta puts people at the heart of her design process, and contends that you should always under promise and then over deliver. In her natural habitat she's sitting on the floor surrounded by bits of paper and post-its or standing in front of a whiteboard with a handful of markers. If she's not there, you can find her on Twitter or playing ice hockey at a rink nearby.
Martina leads the product design and product management practices at Pivotal Labs, London. She helps start-ups and enterprises establish more user-centred, lean and agile product innovation skills. In her practice she focuses on bringing together a balanced team of practitioners with a shared empathy for users, business, technology and design. She facilitates the cultural and organisational change required to collaborate and manage uncertainty more effectively to build better products and services. Martina writes for Elsevier and teaches user-centered design at the University of London.
