Product Design in the Enterprise — Data, Behavior and Privacy

The age old maxim "know thyself" takes on new meaning and consequences in a time when the rate at which data are collected, organized and made available is growing exponentially. The question remains, how may we use this data in an objective way to improve our sense making, decisions and actions?

In this talk, I'll survey the current state of data in the context of 3 phases. The current phase is the quantified self movement, and we can track data and gain analytical insight about our personal activities, health and wellness. We are on the cusp of the second phase, when we will be able to use data to provide greater insight into systems, groups, and communities. The third phase will involve the aggregation of data and analysis around ecosystems and societies and emerging trends for the application of data to solve seemingly intractable global problems.

My expertise is in data products for large online communities in the context of social enterprise software. We will explore the challenges my design team faced when developing a data product allowing users to gain insight into content they author in large online communities. I'll speak to the privacy issues around personal data in the workplace, the challenges we faced when designing at scale for both U.S. and European customers as well as considerations for cognitive biases and behavior changes from using a software product that provides actionable insight to the individual user.

My goal is to leave the audience with a fresh perspective on designing data products at scale, insight into the challenges facing information architects and designers when designing analytical tools, the behavior we are influencing, and our responsibility to users around these issues.

About EuroIA

Over the past nine years, we have broken down cultural barriers, initiated dozens of conferences across Europe, and forged careers. We are proud of our accomplishments, but we know we can achieve even more.

Today, our focus is on breaking down global barriers and sharing information far beyond European borders. This is why our programme now features presentations from the Americas, Asia, and the Pacific Rim.

Yet we remain European. So, what is “Europe”? In terms of geography, we’re east of Greenland, west of Moscow, south of the Artic, and north of the Mediterranean. But the geography is secondary. “Europe” is more a state of mind than an area on a map. But that doesn’t make it less distinct.

Learn. Share. Network. That is what we help you do. And we hope to see you in Edinburgh.
