Things we Learned Designing Connected Products

by Koen van Niekerk

8 min. lightning talk
This talk will summarise ten insights taken from a breadth of connected product design projects. Looking at this from a research perspective, we’ll see each insight paired with an actionable piece of practical advice for IoT projects.

IoT
Connected devices
Wearables
User research

This presentation covers ten insights we obtained designing connected products over the last years. We are an agency that combines the digital AND physical aspects of UX to produce results for clients in both consumer and business markets, both big corporates and start-ups.

We are not slick marketeers, we come from a product design background. This means User Centred Design and User Experience practices are second nature. These themes have been the focus of product design education (physical and digital) for years and we are shaped by them. Our design process reflects this: We gather insights from talking to actual users (in 2014/15 we conducted over fifteen user research studies in eight countries) and we test our designs in an early stage (eight user tests in four countries). Next to research, we have ample experience in both software, physical and electronics prototyping. We practice what we preach!

Next to this user-centred approach we know how to realise IoT products in the real world: How to judge required investments and planning, convince stakeholders, find partners and avoid the pitfalls of progressing your idea from concept to shippable product. These learnings, we’d love to share with you.

We will pack them in ten bite-size insights, each coming from an actual project. The insights will be illustrated with “making-of” / behind the scenes images, focus will not be on the end-result. Each insight will be concluded with some actionable advice.
