20 min. talk
From smart parking to human machine interfaces within vehicles, this talk will share insight from interaction design projects in the automotive industries. Looking at the fundamental factors which are changing the dynamics of transport, and our cities.
Autonomous car
Smart cities
The rise of new interactive technologies within cars has seen an inevitable wave over the last few years — with HD screens, sensor prevalence, connectivity and even autonomy.
In parallel we see surge in new user behaviour within cities — the sharing economy becoming more prevalent with the rise in population and associated traffic, and the ease in which digital technology and connected infrastructure has allowed adoption of services like Uber.
These have both complicated user experiences within vehicles and have prompted companies to think less like manufacturers — but to adopting more of a service & user centred method of development as used in software companies.
As an interaction designer within the automotive team in my company, I have worked both at the nexus of services within the city (e.g. smart parking) and have also redesigned the human machine interfaces/HMI within the vehicle (e.g. instrument cluster redesign). My team and I bring 10 years of experience in tech development and human centred approaches to some of the world’s largest manufacturers.
I will be speaking about the approaches we employ with the help of real world/exploratory projects we have worked on. Hoping to start potent conversations within the conference to help move the industry further.
Harsha is an interaction & service designer with a professional background in industrial design & engineering. He is a graduate from the Copenhagen Institute of Interaction design (CIID) and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi. As part of the consultancy in CIID, he has worked with Toyota’s Kansei division on part of the ‘Window to the World’ project during 2012. Between, he has worked with ‘Service Innovation labs’ in Berlin, solving for urban mobility issues (parking, car-sharing), for two of Germany’s largest car manufacturers. As part of the core automotive team at ustwo, he has been in teams working on HMI and service oriented work with major automotive clients such as Ford & Toyota along with being involved in research work carried out at the University of Washington’s HCI+D department as of late.
